Two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets sold to Taiwan by the United States encountered an unexpected turn of events when they returned to Hawaii shortly after taking off, adding potential delays to their anticipated delivery schedule. The aircraft, identified by serial numbers 6727 and 6728, had initially departed from Hickam Field in Hawaii, but later circled back and landed at the same location. The specific cause behind their unexpected return remains undisclosed.

Taiwan has placed an order for a total of 66 F-16 C/D Block 70 jets, aimed at bolstering the defense capabilities of its eastern region. These aircraft are planned to be stationed at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County and will be operated by the Air Force’s 7th Tactical Fighter Wing. The jets were on a flight path from Hawaii to Guam for refueling and resupply, a journey of approximately eight hours and 20 minutes, before continuing on to Taiwan, a leg expected to take about four hours and 40 minutes.

The initial pair of jets was expected to arrive in Taiwan within the week, following an already delayed delivery schedule. Originally slated for 2023, the delivery timeline was pushed back due to issues related to the relocation and restart of the production line, compounded by supply-chain disruptions.

The remaining aircraft from the order are slated for completion and delivery in the years 2027 and 2028, further enhancing Taiwan’s defense strategy in the face of regional tensions. The unexpected return of the jets to Hawaii marks another hurdle in the delivery process, though the exact reasons and implications of this setback are yet to be clarified.
