China and the European Union have recommitted to collaborating on environmental issues, emphasizing their joint efforts in tackling climate change, biodiversity conservation, and plastic pollution. This commitment was made during a meeting between China’s Minister of Ecology and Environment, Huang Runqiu, and Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, held on the sidelines of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia.

The discussions underscored the importance of the China-EU High-Level Environment and Climate Dialogue, focusing on global biodiversity protection and the ongoing negotiations for an international agreement on plastic pollution. Preparations for the upcoming 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) were also a key part of the conversation.

Huang highlighted the longstanding constructive cooperation between China and the EU in environmental protection and climate action. He stressed the need for enhanced communication, the implementation of existing agreements, and the advancement of shared priorities through international cooperation. Both parties emphasized their commitment to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to restore at least 30 percent of degraded ecosystems by 2030.

Expressing optimism, Huang hoped for China and the EU to achieve significant outcomes at COP17 and COP31, contributing to improved global environmental governance. Ribera acknowledged China’s significant contributions to environmental protection and climate negotiations, advocating for continued dialogue and closer cooperation on these critical issues.

This renewed commitment between China and the EU highlights the crucial role of their collaboration in advancing international environmental agreements and promoting a sustainable future.
