In response to forthcoming European Union regulations mandating the identification of AI-generated content, Anthropic is set to implement a watermarking system for texts produced by its Claude AI models. This initiative involves making subtle modifications to the statistical decisions Claude employs during text creation. Although these alterations are imperceptible to the average reader, they establish detectable patterns with the use of specific technology.

The introduction of watermarking has sparked debates over its potential impact on the quality of AI-generated writing. Some critics express concern that changing the model’s word-selection process might compromise its ability to select the most accurate or natural expressions. However, experts in computer science argue that the effect will likely be minimal, as AI models inherently incorporate randomness in word choice.

According to specialists, the watermarking process does not eliminate randomness from the AI model but instead renders its random decisions statistically predictable.
