In a significant development amid global geopolitical tensions, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to further extend the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation. The decision was announced following their meeting at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People during Putin’s two-day state visit to China. This extension underscores the two nations’ commitment to enhancing political trust and strategic collaboration while addressing the challenges posed by a changing international landscape.
The leaders signed a joint statement to deepen their comprehensive strategic coordination and strengthen friendly cooperation. This agreement was complemented by the signing of 20 cooperation documents spanning various sectors, including economy, trade, education, and technology. Highlighting the enduring nature of their relationship, Xi noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination, a testament to the highest level of bilateral ties in history.
Reflecting on their longstanding partnership, Xi emphasized the principles of non-alliance, nonconfrontation, and mutual respect that have guided their cooperation, which have become crucial in maintaining international fairness and justice. The leaders also issued a joint statement advocating for a multipolar world and a new type of international relations. Putin, who described Xi as his “dear friend,” noted that the unprecedented level of Russia-China relations is self-sufficient and independent of current global conditions, serving as a model for international relations.
Trade between the two countries has shown remarkable growth, with bilateral trade surpassing $200 billion for three consecutive years and a nearly 20 percent increase in the first four months of 2026. Xi urged further alignment between China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and Russia’s development strategy through 2030, aiming to elevate their collaboration across various fields. Both leaders emphasized the importance of upholding international law and the authority of the United Nations, opposing unilateralism and attempts to revive fascism and militarism.
Additionally, China announced an extension of its visa-free policy for Russian citizens until the end of 2027, with Russia reciprocating for Chinese citizens. The two heads of state also exchanged views on pressing international issues, including the situation in the Middle East, where Xi called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a focus on negotiations. The discussions concluded with a welcoming banquet hosted by Xi for Putin in the Golden Hall, reinforcing the strong ties between the two nations.
