China and the United States have reached a consensus on key economic and trade matters following their eighth round of consultations held in New York. The discussions resulted in agreements on reciprocal tariff reductions and the establishment of trade and investment councils, building on previous arrangements made during talks in Kuala Lumpur.
The latest negotiations also marked the initiation of a dialogue on artificial intelligence (AI) under the bilateral economic and trade consultation mechanism. Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent led the discussions on AI-related issues, highlighting the importance both nations place on cooperation in this rapidly advancing field.
These talks are part of ongoing efforts to address mutual concerns and enhance economic ties between the two countries. Both sides have committed to maintaining communication and adhering to the agreed arrangements through the existing consultation mechanism, signaling a continued focus on collaboration over confrontation.
