China is set to increase its imports of advanced technology, key industrial components, energy resources, and high-quality agricultural products as part of its 15th Five-Year Plan, spanning from 2026 to 2030. This strategic move, outlined by the General Administration of Customs, aims to bolster industrial modernization, enhance domestic consumption, and offer Chinese consumers a broader selection of quality international products. Additionally, the country intends to diversify the origins of its imports.
In the first half of the year, China experienced double-digit growth in both imports and exports, with imports outpacing exports due to a rise in domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods. The country plans to continue expanding market access for foreign agricultural and food products by simplifying quarantine and import approval procedures. This year alone, China has granted market access to 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 new countries, broadening its sourcing to over 150 countries and regions worldwide.
Chinese experts highlight that this strategy underscores the country’s commitment to greater market openness, diversified trade, and enhanced global economic cooperation. By increasing imports, China aims to meet the growing demand for industrial upgrades and higher-quality consumer goods, while simultaneously creating fresh opportunities for international exporters.
Officials have expressed optimism that China’s expanding consumer market will present significant opportunities for global businesses as domestic consumption continues to rise. This initiative is seen as a crucial step in aligning with the country’s long-term economic goals, while also fostering stronger economic ties with the international community.
