China’s central bank has bolstered its gold reserves for the 23rd straight month, increasing its holdings to 77.47 million ounces in September, up from 76.73 million ounces in August. The People’s Bank of China added approximately 740,000 ounces during the month, marking a continuation of its strategy to strengthen reserve holdings amid global financial and geopolitical uncertainties.

Analysts suggest that China’s ongoing gold purchases are a move to diversify its reserves and shield against international financial and geopolitical risks. Despite fluctuations in global gold prices, gold is seen as a valuable hedge against inflation and a tool for financial and geopolitical risk management.

This strategic accumulation of gold is also perceived as part of China’s efforts to bolster the credibility of its currency and facilitate the gradual internationalization of the yuan. The central bank is expected to maintain its strategy of adding gold to its reserves as part of a broader reserve management approach.

In contrast, China’s foreign exchange reserves experienced a decline, standing at $3.4003 trillion at the end of September. This represents a drop of $38.1 billion, or 1.11%, from the previous month. The reduction was attributed to changes in exchange rates and movements in global financial asset prices, influenced by shifts in the global economic environment and monetary policies.

Despite the drop in foreign exchange reserves, Chinese authorities expressed confidence in the country’s stable economic conditions, which they believe provide a strong foundation for maintaining overall stability in its foreign exchange reserves.
