China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command reported that it expelled a Philippine C-208 aircraft from the airspace over Huangyan Dao, asserting that the aircraft entered without Chinese approval. The incident took place as the PLA deployed naval and air forces to monitor the aircraft and issued warnings before directing it to vacate the area.
Huangyan Dao, also known as Scarborough Shoal, is a contested area that China claims as part of its territory. The PLA’s statement emphasized that the Philippine aircraft’s entry violated China’s sovereignty, potentially heightening the risk of unintended maritime or aerial incidents. The Chinese military underscored the seriousness of the situation, warning the Philippines against what it described as provocative actions.
In response to the incident, the PLA noted that its forces remain on high alert, prepared to protect China’s territorial claims and security interests. This development underscores the ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, where multiple countries, including China and the Philippines, have overlapping territorial claims.
These actions by the PLA reflect China’s broader strategy to assert control over disputed territories in the South China Sea. The region is a significant point of contention due to its strategic importance and rich resources, leading to frequent confrontations between China and other nations with competing claims.
