Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commenced a three-day working visit to China on Tuesday, emphasizing the strengthening of bilateral relations and advancing cooperation in emerging technologies. The visit will see Anwar engaging in high-level discussions and participating in key international events in Shanghai and Hangzhou.
Anwar, who also holds the position of Malaysia’s finance minister, is slated to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou on Thursday. This meeting is expected to address mutual interests and further deepen the robust economic ties between the two nations, with China having been Malaysia’s leading trading partner for 17 consecutive years.
During his stay in Shanghai, Anwar will attend WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, where he will deliver a keynote speech at the WorldSkills Conference. His agenda also includes participation in the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia holds the distinction of being a Guest Country of Honour. These events provide a platform for Anwar to focus on topics such as artificial intelligence, digital trade, and international cooperation.
The Malaysian prime minister’s visit aims to attract greater foreign investment into Malaysia by engaging with Chinese business and technology leaders. The strategic dialogue underscores the importance of reinforcing economic partnerships, highlighted by the significant bilateral trade figure of US$113.82 billion recorded between January and August this year.
