Kazakhstan is set to enhance its financial ties with China by introducing cross-border QR-code payments by the close of 2026, a move that will enable travelers between the two countries to engage in mobile transactions seamlessly. This development is part of Kazakhstan’s broader initiative to establish cross-border payment services with 11 countries, including major economic players like China, India, and the United Arab Emirates, alongside neighboring nations such as Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The extension of these services to other countries is anticipated to roll out from mid-2027.
The collaboration with China is poised to extend the reach of the yuan beyond its traditional roles in trade and investment, facilitating its use in everyday consumer transactions. This initiative is indicative of the strengthening financial relations between Beijing and Central Asian countries, a relationship further bolstered by China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative. Kazakhstan and China’s existing payment partnerships, such as the 2024 collaboration between Kazakhstan’s Kaspi.kz and China’s Alipay, which enabled Kaspi users to make mobile payments in China, have laid the groundwork for this new development.
China’s efforts to promote the yuan on the international stage are part of a broader strategy to enhance cross-border payments and reduce reliance on the US dollar. The expansion of the digital yuan and QR-based payment systems are central to this strategy.
