Signaling a comprehensive discussion is ahead, President Donald Trump said both he and Chinese President Xi Jinping “have a lot to talk about” at their upcoming meeting.
The “big meeting” is set for Thursday in South Korea, on the sidelines of the APEC summit. Trump, speaking from Tokyo, was highly optimistic about the outcome.
“I think it’s going to work out very well, actually. It’s gonna be great for everybody,” he said.
This positive outlook comes amid a new trade flare-up. The US has threatened 100% tariffs from November 1 in response to China’s rare earth export controls.
This escalation, along with new US port fees and Chinese countermeasures, has raised the stakes for the meeting.
The APEC summit serves as the setting for these crucial talks, marking the final day of Trump’s Asia visit. His tour has been focused on trade, aiming to highlight American economic influence in the region.
