Chinese President Xi Jinping met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Beijing on Friday, where both leaders expressed a commitment to enhancing their countries’ strategic partnership. The discussions centered on fostering stronger bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation between the two global economic powers.

During the meeting, Xi highlighted the potential for closer collaboration, emphasizing the complementary strengths of China and Germany. He pointed out Germany’s expertise in advanced manufacturing and high-quality products, which aligns with China’s focus on modernization and high-quality economic development. Xi urged German businesses to increase their investments in China to leverage its large consumer market and, in return, called for Germany to ensure a fair and transparent business environment for Chinese companies operating there.

The leaders discussed opportunities for cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, green technology, low-carbon development, and the digital economy, which they believe are crucial for future competitiveness. Xi also advocated for greater collaboration in education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, especially with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Germany approaching in 2027.

On the topic of China-European Union relations, Xi reiterated the importance of prioritizing cooperation over competition. He expressed hope for enhanced dialogue with the European Union to manage differences and promote a balanced international order and inclusive global economic growth.

German President Steinmeier acknowledged China’s economic and technological advancements and reaffirmed Germany’s adherence to the One-China policy. He expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations, emphasizing the need for dialogue and consultation to resolve economic and trade disagreements. Steinmeier also conveyed Germany’s readiness to work with China in supporting international peace, free trade, and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.

Both leaders underscored the necessity of opposing protectionism and trade conflicts, as these issues pose increasing challenges to the international economic and political order. The meeting reflected a shared interest in strengthening economic cooperation and maintaining international stability amid evolving global conditions.
