Donald Trump announced ongoing efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, nations currently engaged in a border conflict. The former US President stated that both countries desire an immediate halt to hostilities and are eager to resume trade discussions with the United States.
Trump confirmed separate conversations with representatives from both Cambodia and Thailand. He emphasized that peace and prosperity would naturally follow a ceasefire. In a social media post, he revealed phone calls with the Prime Minister of Cambodia and the acting Prime Minister of Thailand.
The conflict between Cambodia and Thailand has intensified recently, with both nations citing self-defense in clashes. The dispute primarily revolves around the ownership of the ancient Hindu temple, Prasat Ta Muen Thom, located on their shared 817-km land border. The recent fighting has resulted in over 30 fatalities and thousands displaced.
Trump indicated that while both countries are looking to return to “Trading Table” with the United States, such agreements would be contingent on the cessation of fighting. He expressed his intention to finalize trade deals once peace is restored in the region. He also drew a parallel to the India-Pakistan conflict, which he claimed to have previously helped resolve, stating his aim is to “simplify a complex situation” and prevent further loss of life.
